Quick answer
Neither is always cheaper. Booking sites are quick for international guests who want instant confirmation and card payment. A local agency such as ReserVella is useful when you qualify for an Egyptian or resident rate, want to pay in Egyptian pounds, need transfers or a multi-hotel trip, or want someone to check the hotel's rules for you. Always compare the full price for the same room, meal plan and cancellation terms.
Travellers often ask whether it is cheaper to book an Egyptian hotel through a local travel agency or through a booking site. The honest answer is that it depends on who you are, which rate you qualify for and what else you need. Here is how to compare fairly.
Side by side
| Booking site (e.g. Booking.com) | Local agency (e.g. ReserVella) | |
|---|---|---|
| Best for | International guests booking one hotel quickly | Egyptian and Gulf guests, families, honeymoons, multi-stop trips |
| Rates | Mostly international rates | Can quote the Egyptians & residents rate where the hotel offers one |
| Currency | Shown in the currency you choose | Egyptian guests in EGP; other nationalities in USD |
| Payment | Card, at booking or at the hotel | InstaPay or bank transfer after a written quote |
| Confirmation | Instant | After the agency confirms with the hotel |
| Extras | Hotel only, sometimes with add-ons | Transfers, boats, honeymoon requests, room choice |
| Help | Platform customer service | A person you message on WhatsApp in Arabic or English |
When a booking site makes sense
- You are an international guest booking a single hotel and want instant confirmation.
- You want to pay by card and manage the booking yourself in an app.
- You have found a flexible rate with free cancellation that suits your plans.
When a local agency makes sense
- You are Egyptian or live in Egypt. Many hotels sell a special rate to Egyptians and residents, paid in Egyptian pounds, with a valid Egyptian ID, passport or residency checked at check-in. See our rates guide.
- You need more than a room. Airport transfers, the boat to Tawila Island, family rooms or a honeymoon setup are easier to arrange in one conversation.
- You want rules checked before you pay. Children's ages, marriage certificates, adults-only age limits and cancellation terms differ between hotels.
- You prefer to talk to a person in Arabic or English rather than a platform.
How to compare prices fairly
- Use the same dates, room type, view and meal plan on both quotes.
- Check the total including taxes and service charges, in the same currency.
- Compare the cancellation terms: a cheaper non-refundable rate is not the same product as a flexible one.
- Check which rate it is (Egyptians & residents or international) and whether you qualify.
- Ask what is included: transfers, boats, honeymoon extras.
How to check any travel agency
- Ask for the company name, the office address and the tourism licence number, and check they match.
- Get the price, rate type and cancellation terms in writing before you pay.
- Pay through traceable methods such as InstaPay or bank transfer to the company, and keep the receipt.
- Look for real, recent reviews and a working phone and WhatsApp number.
