Sharm El Sheikh sits on the southern tip of Egypt's Sinai Peninsula, where the Gulf of Aqaba meets the Red Sea. It is one of Egypt's best-known resort destinations: sheltered bays, bright coral reefs close to shore and a dramatic desert-and-mountain backdrop.
Resorts are spread along several coastal areas, including Naama Bay, Shark's Bay and Ras Nasrani (Montazah). Many have a private beach or house reef, and well-known dive and snorkel areas such as Ras Mohammed National Park and the Straits of Tiran can be reached on day trips.
Highlights
Diving and snorkelling
Reefs start close to the shore at many resorts, and boat trips head to Ras Mohammed National Park and the Straits of Tiran.
Naama Bay evenings
A busy promenade of restaurants, cafés and entertainment, a short ride from most resorts.
Sinai excursions
Desert safaris by quad or jeep, and longer trips to Mount Sinai and Saint Catherine's Monastery, which are usually done overnight or in the early hours.
Best time to visit Sharm El Sheikh
Spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November) are the most comfortable. Winter days are mild but evenings and the sea are cooler. Summer is hot and dry, with the warmest sea, and suits guests who love heat and long pool-and-reef days.
